Morfitt Logo

My father-in-law plays in a band playing songs from the 60s, 70s, 80s by bands such as the Eagles, Beatles and Drifters. A logo and artwork was required which he wanted printed on t-shirts for the band. His idea was to have the evolution of man imagery but with one of them to be a police office holding a truncheon whilst scratching his arse.

He wanted the band name “Morfitt” to be “in a nice font underneath“. I went one step further and ran with the police theme for the band name. It was a quick turn around job as he wanted it for a gig.

I used the Police emblem/badge as inspiration to form the O.

I originally chose a Serif typeface because I felt it suited their style of music – middle of the road/soft rock/folk rock/pop. However it is hard to align this with the style of artwork he wanted which is anti-police/anarchy/punk.

I played around with the typeface to see how it would look with different typefaces.

Having getting feedback about the typeface from the client, I worked the 4th logo shown in the image above.

I cleaned up the badge emblem and also the evolution of man artwork.

This is has been a hard brief to work on due to the juxtaposition between the imagery wanted and the band’s music style.  I don’t believe it is possible to combine the two without it either looking incoherent or without leaning further to one style than the other. The final logo is probably the nearest I could get without going too far either way but I don’t feel it reflects their music style, however, the client is happy with the design and is going to get the t-shirts printed himself.

After designing a t-shirt and logo the band wanted a website. Another rush job has he had the domain name printed on the t-shirts for an upcoming gig but didn’t have a website. For the sake of speed I went through template options with the band’s founder. A few tweaks to the template plus colour changes were made to make sure the theme worked for the band.

He also wanted the website populating with a few posts linking to videos the band had put on Youtube. Links to their Youtube and Facebook profile was added. Unfortunately they were no good quality images of the band – all either low res phone images or stills from Youtube videos. I came up with the idea of adding a halftone effect to hide the poor quality and then converting to duo-tone. The duo-tone added a pop to the images. Although in an ideal world good quality images would be used – this is something I have fed back to the band.

Crafty Business Sheffield Autumn Fair Poster

Crafty Business Autumn Fair Poster

I created this poster for Crafty Business Sheffield (www.facebook.com/groups/CraftyBusinessSheffield/). They are having a Craft Fair at the Victoria Hall Methodist Church.

Initial Sketches

With not much to go on – no images to be included just a list of information that needed to be on the poster. Because this is a craft fair it feels right that it has a handmade feel. Also, I wanted to include “Autumn” in the poster too. I sketched out a few ideas, two examples below:

Vector Illustration

I used my sketches to create vector illustrations in Adobe Illustrator. The majority of the illustrations are based on hand-drawn sketches with some details added later, the text (apart from the bottom section) is hand-drawn.

Client Feedback

First Version of Craft Fair Poster

First Version

Crafty Business wanted their brand to stand out more and felt that the text should be bigger. But they liked the unusual leaf motif and did not want to see that changed.

Final Design

After receiving feedback from Crafty Business I created the final design. Their name is in a bold banner to add emphasis to their brand.

Miss Lovelies Hair & Beauty Re-Brand

I was in my local soft play centre when I came across this at the till (they usually have a few leaflets on display):

Original Miss Lovelies Business Card and Leaflet

Original Miss Lovelies Business Card and Leaflet

It caught my eye because of the pink and black combo, then the typeface choices stood out followed by the pixellation. Possibly not visible on your screen but the leaflet had clearly be designed in either Photoshop or something similar. But at a low resolution, stretched out to fit A4 resulting in a poor image quality

The whole thing screamed bad design. Because of this I thought I’m going to re-design it.

Miss Lovelies Logo

First port of call – the logo. There isn’t anything consistently been used across their social media or shop signage as a logo. Therefore I sketched out a few ideas before moving onto Illustrator. Designing it in black and white before adding colour. The salon owner clearly had a liking for striking colour combinations I came up with a the eye-popping pink and orange colour scheme.

A funky background is applied to the business cards. The artwork is based on hair and beauty accessories including hair clips and mascara brushes.

Leaflet

The same eye-catching background is used on the leaflet to catch peoples attention. Reducing the leaflet to a standard DL size saves on printing costs. The original leaflet is A4 but because there is not enough information on the leaflet to justify keeping it’s current size.

The price list on the back is kept simple therefore potential customers can locate prices easily.

Living Space Brochure Front Cover

Living Space – Logo, Brochure, Tags, Stationery

Having been inspired by The Sheffield College’s Graphic Design exhibition, I decided to do my own version of the Furniture Shop Brochure Brief. I didn’t have a copy of the brief so I took inspiration from the other work on show to come up with my own. See links at the bottom.

The name Living Space was born after a bit of brainstorming. They’re a company with a few furniture shops based in the North and they required a re-brand. They sell furniture that suits modern needs. Along side this they also sell bathroom suites and kitchen’s. Living Space are similar to Ikea in that they stock a large range of home-wares, office furniture, sofas, beds and everything in-between.

Logo Design

Creating something modern and clear in design was my priority. Although I have not designed it, beyond a few simple sketches, the internal shop signage would be based on the logo. So there would be a kitchen representing the kitchen zone in the store, a bath to represent the bathroom zone and so on. Because of this I created a simple outline of a sofa and combined it with a modern sans-serif typeface (Museo Sans).

The logo would be used in the above form on the shop front.

Brochure Design

A fresh but luxury feel was created for the brochure. Contained within are well designed, high end products and this was reflected in the design. Each section is represented with its own colour.

Business Cards and Letterhead

Both the business cards and letterhead use the same repeating pattern for the reverse side. The clean modern feel is represented on the front with a more playful reverse to bring the designs to life.

The contact information is displayed clearly on the letterhead and represented by symbols for easy location by customers.

Broken – Short Story

Broken is a personal project featuring a short story written by myself and hand drawn illustrations.

It is based on real life events but I have changed names in order to project identities. The story is about how a women succumbs to a controlling partner. How she is manipulated into thinking that they only person who truly loves her is a her partner. She believes that her family have turned against her partner to hurt her not because they are concerned for her and her childrens well being.

“Drip, Drip, Drip. That’s how they do it. They don’t push you away from your friends and family straight away. They don’t take away your financial freedom on the second date. They do it slowly, so slowly that you might never notice what you’ve lost.

You’ve become accustomed to a life where you are always with your partner and when your not they call you all the time. You automatically check with your partner about every little thing. You don’t think about going out with your friends because you’ve fallen out with them.

Maybe if your lucky you might still get to see your family but why would you want to? I mean your family don’t care about you do they? They don’t have your best interests at heart only your partner truly loves and cares about you.”

Graphic Design Process

I wanted to get a across the anger but also the strong feelings of love. I settled on the idea of using hand-drawn typography with traditional digital typography. It felt more personal and alive.

With it being something personal (I’m not the abused women in the story but it is someone I know) it was a difficult project to complete. But I’m glad I did it as it gave me the chance to express certain feelings and my creativity.

I tried a few different methods for the illustrations. One is hand painted. I have used stencils a few times, paper cut outs and even rolling up paper and using it as a stamp for the spawn.

Software Used: Photoshop and InDesign

Illustration Materials: Pen, Gouache, Paper, Pencil.

Abuse is complicated as it features many aspects and violence is just one of them. Some partners are never violent they rely on other methods such as isolation and controlling finances in order to prevent you from leaving them.

Action Aid Poster

Action Aid and Sheffield Food Banks

Women in countries suffering with war, famine, natural disaster or other humanitarian crisis often have to choose between food and sanitary products. A monthly donation can help these women and girls get access to clean safe feminine hygiene products.

Here are a few of my sketches and ideas I had for an advertising campaign which would feature in Women’s public toilets.

I finalised the poster design for Action Aid using Illustrator and InDesign. However, I felt that one of my other ideas for Food Banks would work well too.

This needs to stop, Period! Action Aid https://www.actionaid.org.uk/

Many women in the UK, often young girls, struggle to access sanitary products. Often caused by the numbers of girls living in poverty their parents have to prioritise food and energy bills. It is one of the unseen problems which also effects homeless women and girls too.

I thought this advert could be featured around schools, universities, hospitals, GP surgeries and other suitable areas of Sheffield in order to promote donations of sanitary products to Food Banks.

CS Plastering Van Signage

CS Plastering Logo

CS Plastering’s current logo looked dated. After researching the local and UK competition I realised a lot of plasters’ logos look the same.

I admit it wasn’t easy coming up with a design that said plastering without being cheesy.

It need to look professional but friendly – not everyone likes having trades people in because it involves having a stranger in your home and many people have had bad experiences before. Potential customer want to feel they can trust the person doing the work.
